Chapter Eleven
~ Reunion of Old Friends ~
Her breath caught in her throat and she pushed the thought away. No, that’s impossible. Will is a powerful sorcerer—nothing can bring him down. Ash believed it in the depths of her heart. Nothing can get the best of Will Everett—not a dragon, or ten thousand dragons, or an army of ninjas. He’d destroy them all. Will, he’s...bullet-proof. She took in a deep breath of the cool, pure mountain air and as she exhaled, a weight felt lifted from her shoulders. All is not yet lost. Terces will know where Will has gone. My nerves are probably just getting the best of me. She strode up the stone steps, happy that Terces would be there to greet her.
Ash waited at the doorway, gazing at the old house and taking it all in. Except for the dirt on the windows and a few extra cobwebs hanging from the eaves, it looked just the way it had when she saw it last. She smiled through her fear, wondering how the place had managed to hold up so well while dragons marauded around, causing destruction like she’d seen in Corrin. The sight of a fully intact building filled her with hope. Some things remain, despite the darkness that swarms over the Earth.
Ash saw the door open just wide enough to admit Greymalkin and then close. Her mind raced as she imagined the exchange taking place within, out of sight. Faced with this unknown, she began to worry. With the exception of some good moments, it seems like my life has been a nightmare since the day I set foot in this realm. She choked back a sob, remembering the circumstances that had brought her to Fallenwood three years ago. Her stepfather had died—a man whose life glowed like a beacon of light. The demons of the world had howled with laughter that day. Ash remembered that horrible day all too well. Unable to take the pain of scattering her stepfather’s ashes, she’d run into the woods and somehow happened upon a portal. These memories vanished as she saw movement. The door opened and there stood Terces. He smiled, spread his arms wide, and gestured for her to come closer. Ash started into a sprint and Gruck flew off her shoulder, cawing loudly. Ash thought she heard annoyance in this. She rushed up and grabbed Terces into a tight embrace.
“Oof!” said Terces. He spoke as though needing to force the words out. “Your Majesty hugs very tightly!” Ash took this as a statement of fact and not a complaint. She held him like a precious treasure that she dared not lose.
“Terces,” said Ash, clutching the jester’s shoulders.
“Your highness,” he replied.
Ash scrunched her nose and puckered her lips like she’d eaten something sour. “’Nuff o’ that,” she replied. “I don’t even have a kingdom anymore.”
Terces grasped Ash in a tight embrace and then reached up to tousle her hair. “It’s all right, kid. Who needs a kingdom? You’re home now.
